Toy collection for hospitalised children

A resident with a big heart started a toy collection for children who are spending the festive season in hospital and she needs the community’s help to make this initiative a success.

Donna Sipman said that people always get excited about the festive season and tend to forget about children who are hospitalised. “Often when you give the children toys, they really enjoy them and it gives them comfort and they appreciate it. This is my first time doing the drive,” said Sipman.

“Some children are not privileged enough to receive presents during Christmas and I just wanted them to have a good Christmas through collecting toys for them. My sister, who is a doctor at the Joburg General Hospital, inspired me to start a toy drive and made me see the needs of children who are not well.
Sipman added that she was also involved in a blanket drive where she got the community involved, such as corporates and local schools. During winter, the blankets were donated to the Randburg Trauma Centre which donated the blankets to charities around Johannesburg.

“I encourage schools, companies and individuals to donate new, used, crocheted and knitted toys for both boys and girls. We would like all the toys by 9 December so we can donate the toys just before Christmas. We are happy to collect and residents are welcome to contact me.”
